How can an adult couple with kids connect with people to make new friends?

My wife and I have lived in a new community for several years. Neither of us grew up in the area, so we came in without any connections or family in the area. It's a rural community of about 12,000 people. We've not had any success making friends. We have a lot of friendly acquaintances, mostly from our church, but we haven't been able to click with anyone to the extent that we would consider them to be close friends. We're in our mid-30's with 3 boys (age 3, 6, and 9).

Any ideas of ways to connect with new people in our situation? It's especially difficult, because we can't just drop everything to go hang out with someone. We always have to line up a sitter, which is challenging.

By the way...have you seen the King of Queens episode where they go to a supermarket to meet new couples, and invite them to hang out? I'd like to think we aren't that desperate yet! :)How can an adult couple with kids connect with people to make new friends?
Not sure where you are (since you said a rural location this may not help), but check out Momslikeme.com to see if there is one for your area. The one is our area is really active with parents meeting up and making new friends both with and without their kids!
