How do I get rid of a virus that changes the results of a web search in yahoo or google?

Every time I use Yahoo or Google to search for something, the results that are displayed have the correct header (or preview), but the actual web address is wrong. For example, if i search for ';Facebook';, the blue link SAYS Facebook, and even has the correct ';Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who ... Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in ... Facebook 漏 2009 ...'; header.....but it actually takes me to www.surfwax.com. This happens for anything I search on, using any search engine.

I have tried to erase History, clear out Temp files;I ran Ad-Aware and Spypot, but it's still there. It's obviously some virus that I picked up somewhere, but how do it get rid of it?How do I get rid of a virus that changes the results of a web search in yahoo or google?
Try ';Avast!'; for your anti-virus needs:

Keep your Ad-Aware and Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy. They are both very good programs. Avast is the best free AV solution available today, so you want that if you don't have an AV prog or no longer like the one you have. You also need a good software firewall in addition to a hardware one like comes in many routers. If your router has no firewall then replace it with one that does. I your router does have a firewall then change the password. All router ship with the same exact ';factory'; password which makes them so easy to get past. This is why it's a good idea to install a second layer of protection in software firewall in addition to the hardware one. Comodo Firewall is a good free one that you can get from here:

http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

That said, there are mal-wares out there that have the ability to infest and disable your on-board anti-malware arsenal rendering them useless.

Therefore, it is a good idea to scan with at least one, preferably two on-line anti-malware scanners to make sure your on-board arsenal is OK before using it to scan your computer. This way you lower the risk of getting ';false negatives'; from your on-board arsenal.

As another answerer explained, you DO want to re-set System Restore. By getting a clean restore point _after_ you've cleaned up the infestation that now inhabits your computer you won't be able to re-infect it with System Restore.

Here are the two On-Line anti-malware scanners that I have trusted for many years:

and

After you've downloaded and SAVE *zip* files of any progs you may want to add for protection run those two on-line scanners IN the order listed. If/when they find something wrong clean it up. Then UPDATE your existing on-board arsenal and KEEP it that way. Run it at LEAST once a week. I run mine on my Windoze computer every time I put it on the net.

If you find a program that you want to try and have or will download and save a zip of it you will want to install that program or programs with NO other progs running in the back ground. It's best to install progs in Safe Mode, but if you can't for whatever reason it can be done by going into MSCONFIG to shut them off. If you need help with this then contact me through here and I'll step you through the procedure.

I hope this helps. Good Luck! :)
